Forums > Position-by-Position: Safeties

After the last podcast, it got me thinking, "Who do I want on our team in each position?" There are many ways to do this, but in this instance (and forum posts following) we must roughly keep in mind the salary cap. However, I will not take into account their current contract situation.

So, lets start in the defensive backfield. Here are the Safeties that are on our current roster:

#33 - Michael Griffin
#26 - Jordan Babineaux
#24 - Chris Hope

Having the 14th ranked passing defense is barely in the top half of the league and is not what I call stellar, but it is also one of the best parts of this team.

Honestly, I think it is time for Chris Hope to retire at the end of this season, and although Jordan Babineaux has played admirably (even having a slew of tackles) while Hope has been hurt, I'm not sure he is the answer at strong safety.

Michael Griffin still has "Pro Bowl potential", but has struggled when he is called on to do more than the average player at his position (helping out when inexperienced players are in the game, etc.). I don't consider him a leader on defense, but a darn good safety nonetheless.

If we looked to upgrade at the Strong Safety position, here is a short list that will be in range of our budget:

Charlie Peprah (Green Bay Packers)
George Wilson (Buffalo Bills)
Kenny Phillips (New York Giants)
LaRon Landry (Washington Redskins)
Kam Chancellor (Seattle Seahawks)

After looking at this list, this may also be a position where we keep Babineaux, but draft someone to groom.
